Cannavacciuolo a Neapolitan Chef Who Doesn't Mince His Words

A 2 star Michelin restaurant, a tell-it-as-it-is personality and an undisputed talent have made Antonio Cannavacciuolo a celebrity chef nobody should mess with.

Watch him in the Italian version of Kitchen Nightmares or in Masterchef, and you’ll know why. Cannavacciuolo never holds back. He speaks his mind and calls a spade a spade. Using his thundering voice and his 6'3’’ and 230 pound figure he has uttered comments that have made him a sort of a legend in Italy.

During a Masterchef episode, when a contestant botched his tagliatelle into a gooey slimy heap Cannavaccioulo asked him what his job was. The man replied that he was an artist, or rather a sculptor. Then Cannavacciuolo challenged him to turn his food into a sculpture. Unfazed, the man made it into a S shaped thing and called it a duck. Cannavacciuolo first eyed that piece of art, then said: to me this just looks like an S that can only stand for schifezza (junk).

Cannavacciuolo’s usual remarks are no less cutting. In the face of a badly cooked dish he doesn’t refrain himself from calling it a cagata (a turd). And if a chef does a bad job, he is not afraid to say that they are no chefs and should go back to school.

Italians simply love him. As harsh as it may seems to you, Cannavacciuolo is not a contrived chef who puts on a celebrity persona for the sake of the showbiz. In fact Nothing is fake about Antonio Cannavacciuolo. With his thick Neapolitan accent he speaks everyman’s language and does not sugarcoat his comments.

As a matter of fact everyone can tell that Cannavacciuolo is a good man at heart.”
